This Labrador Retriever sees poorly from both eyes. Looking closely, however, you will see a significant difference between the two eyes. What is your diagnosis for the left eye? What about the right eye? How can you tell?
Both eyes have cataracts, as an explanation for this dog’s poor vision. The left eye shows leukocoria (whiteness within the pupil) typical of an advanced cataract. The cataract in the right eye obscures much of the iris and pupil, indicating that it is located in the anterior chamber. Two important points: 1. acutely luxated lenses are often clear so the pupil may still be visible and 2. unlike this dog, most dogs with anterior lens lunation are painful and demonstrate marked blepharospasm.
